Companion Animals ("Pets")
The time is coming, however, when people will be astonished that mankind needed so long a time to regard thoughtless injury to life as incompatible with ethics.

Can my dog or cat be vegan?

This is a question you'll have to answer for yourself. Many say yes, some say no. Most frequently you'll see that cats need 70% of their diet to be protein and therefore have a larger requirement for animal flesh. You'll find other sites that say their cat has been vegan and healthy for some time. Dogs, it seems, need only about 30% of their diet to be protein and many claim their dogs live happy, healthy and extended lives on a vegan diet. I've been converting Brooks to a vegan diet very slowly over four months now. He's 80% vegan, I make his food and use a high quality vegan kibble. He's as healthy as ever, still running about 20 miles a few times a week. His coat is softer than ever (he loves oils), his eyes are bright and is as keen as ever.

Here are some resources to help you make your decision with quotes from the sites themselves:
"Harbingers pioneered this cruelty-free way of diet for ethical reasons after careful research. It soon proved to be much healthier than commercial diets. Letters and calls poured in from all over the world. People were simply amazed at health improvements that took place in their cats and dogs. Read actual case histories by selecting Cat Stories or Dog Stories."

"There are three great reasons to feed your companion animal a vegan diet. For the environment, for their health and for the animal welfare. On this page you will find reliable links and information on all three. Every effort has been made to provide the most up to date and accurate information possible."

"It's relatively easy to maintain a healthy vegan dog. Cats are more tricky, but with commitment, it can be done for most but not all cats. The information provided here is to help you make informed decisions on your companion's diet. Read as much as you can, and do your own research. I am sure you will find that with a little effort you can help your dog or cat transition to a vegan or at least mostly vegan diet."

Vegetarian Cats and Dogs, PeTA
Many vegetarians and vegans feed healthful, meatless diets to their companion animals. One remarkable example is that of Bramble, a 27-year-old border collie whose vegan diet of rice, lentils, and organic vegetables earned her consideration by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest living dog in 2002. Studies have shown that the ailments associated with meat consumption in humans, such as allergies, cancer, and kidney, heart, and bone problems, also affect many nonhumans. Pet food has also been recalled during mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), scares because of the risk that contaminated meat was processed into the food. One deputy commissioner states that cats especially "are susceptible to BSE." More…
