Truckee River: 2.2015
The Truckee River is comprised of the upper and lower watersheds. The upper watershed's major contributors are Lake Tahoe, a natural reservoir which spills into the Truckee River riverbed at Tahoe City, heading south for a distance before turning west and north, thence heading east just west of the town of Truckee where Cold Creek cofludes with Donner Creek before becoming a tributary.
Trout and Martis Creeks also are tributaries and further downriver Prosser Creek and the Little Truckee River as well as Juniper, Gray and Bronco creeks before the hydroelectric powerstatation at Floriston. Dog, Sunrise and Hunter Creeks are tributaries as the river enters the lower Truckee River watershed and is controlled by the Chalk Bluffs Treatment plant near McCarran Blvd. The only significant tributary in the lower Truckee is Steamboat Creek on the east end of the Reno/Sparks metropolitan area at Vista and the water treatment plant there just west of UNR Farms.
All irrigation ditches issuing from the Truckee River bringing water throughout the Truckee Meadows have been closed to conserve Truckee River flow by order of the Federal Water Master as of Wednesday, June 3, 2015.
The Truckee is diverted to Fernely farming areas by the Newlands Reclamation Act at Derby Dam near Wadsworth which drained Winnemucca Lake.
